Job Loss Data
State Manufacturing Jobs Down
By Nearly 9,000
An April 4, 2004 article
in The Charleston Gazette indicates that West Virginia
has lost 8,730 manufacturing jobs in the past few years. Those
job losses, based on a new report from the AFL-CIO, were
eliminated at 53 different companies in West Virginia.
West Virginia Job Loss Close
to 45,000
According to employment data from the state Bureau of Employment
Programs, West Virginia has lost nearly 45,000 jobs since
2001.

West Virginia Job Growth 1/2
Of National Average
Further evidence of West Virginia's lagging employment
situation, the W.V.U. Bureau of Business and Economic Research
finds that West Virginia's job growth rate has been nearly
one-half of what the national average has been. From
1997-2002, West Virginia's job growth rate was 0.7 percent
compared to a national average of 1.2 percent. If the
state's job growth rate during this time had been on par with
the national averge, West Virginia should have 20,000 additional
jobs.
